Celebrating over two decades of transformative teaching, Dr Gouws, who is also the Programme Coordinator for Chemical Process Technology, has further solidified his reputation as a pioneer in STEM pedagogy by earning a nomination for the National University Teacher Award (TAU).
Renowned for bridging academic theory with industrial practice, his innovative approach emphasises active, humanising and student-centred learning and blends process simulation, foundational skills development and multilingual learning tools to support students from diverse backgrounds.
Dr Gouws is a widely respected researcher in electrochemistry and green hydrogen technologies and the author of Chasing Challenges: Scholarly Learning and Teaching for Chemical Process Technicians.
His dual focus on cutting-edge clean energy research and student-centered educational frameworks sets a benchmark for higher education in South Africa. This national recognition highlights his enduring dedication to empowering the next generation of scientists and chemical process technicians to meet industry's evolving demands.
The Teaching Development Unit within the University’s Learning and Teaching Collaboration was instrumental in the design and implementation of his teaching portfolio, says Dr Gouws and he thanked Drs Noluthando Toni, the Director and Viwe Ndayi, as well as Dr Buyiswa Hlangothi, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science for their support.
“For me, this award has a double significance. It was your case that prompted the idea that we need an award recognising excellence in teaching itself, and not only educational research, and I am extremely pleased that you are the first recipient,” the current SACI President Professor Nikoletta Bathori said.
