Mandela University’s Grant Snyman, who also lectures Instrumental Conducting and Clarinet and Saxophone (Instrumental Studies) at the University, was recently selected as one of seven conductors for the semifinals of the 6th South African Conductors' Competition.

Formerly known as the Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition, this is the only competition of its kind in South Africa and is presented by the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.

Maestro Arjan Tien presented a masterclass session to the 14 participants selected for the first round and thereafter joined the selection panel comprising Bernhard Gueller, Jeremy Silver and Louis Heyneman.

All the participants had to prepare three overtures, namely Verdi's La Forza del Destino, Weber's Overture to Oberon and Beethoven's Egmont Overture.

Grant is also the Co-Principal Clarinettist in the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. The other successful conductors were Jason Atherton, Joshua Louis, Stuart Martin, Damien Philander, Chevonne Plaatjies and Lesedi Sibanda.
