Since its inception in 2008, the Isisusa franchise has provided both a unique platform for
collaboration between students, staff, alumni, community musicians and national and international artists, and a great concert for local jazz lovers.
The new online version will also give far greater numbers of people from around the globe the opportunity to watch a top-class show for free.
In another first for 2020, all the music performed for this year has been composed by the artists and musical director Ulagh Williams.
Standard Bank Young Artist for Jazz, Sisonke Xonti (saxophone) will perform music off his album ‘Iyonde’ and share the stage with Mandela University student Andy Ndlazilwana (vocals) and respected jazz musician, educator and alumnus Kyle Du Preez (trombone).
“We can’t wait to share the energy and joy we felt on stage with the world,” says Williams of the hour-long concert that was recorded in an empty South Campus Auditorium.
“While COVID-19 has seriously impacted the performing arts, it’s also forced us to think anew. Some of the pieces are being performed for the very first time. We are excited to showcase fresh, original music that captures the resilient spirit of musicians worldwide.”
The pre-recorded concert has been intertwined with behind-the-scenes footage, special messages from the artists and insights from the organisers.
Viewing details will be shared closer to the event, which will be screened for free.
