Change the world

30/07/2025

Mandela University’s Hubs of Convergence (HoC) recently hosted a workshop celebrating the life and legacy of Fieldmore Mapeto (1956–2018), a Gqeberha-based intellectual known for his commitment to critical pedagogy and working-class struggles.

Held at the University’s Bird Street Campus, the workshop brought together representatives from Amandla, the Mapeto family, and the HoC to co-develop a sustainable Engagement School to honour his legacy.

This envisioned school aims to be a platform for popular education and radical dialogue, rooted in community-led governance and integrating the diverse perspectives of workers, youth, academics, and organisers.

The workshop concluded with the endorsement of the African Voices of Expression Engagement School as an institutional community partnership.

It reflected strong collaboration and a shared commitment to building a living tribute to Fieldmore Mapeto’s life and ideals through education, dialogue, and socially just collective action.
