SAIAB is a National Research Infrastructure Platform of the Department of Science and Innovation. The purpose of the Advisory panel is to act as a strategic, scientific and technical advisory body to the SAIAB Managing Director through:

Providing independent expertise, feedback and recommendations,

advising the MD on the development and implementation of the Facility’s policies and strategic directions for research, training, service and science engagement,

supporting the MD to deliver on the Facility’s vision, mission, core functions and related operations as effectively as possible,

enabling the MD, through the members’ combined knowledge, organisational and personal networks, to establish and maintain sound relationships and strategic partnerships with the higher education sector, aquatic science and broader science community,

assisting the MD to position the SAIAB within local, regional and international scientific arenas and
-
assisting the MD to ensure alignment of the SAIAB’s strategic and operational frameworks with those of the NRF.
As a national facility of the National Research Foundation (NRF), SAIAB serves as a major scientific resource for knowledge and understanding the biodiversity and functioning of globally significant aquatic ecosystems. With both marine and freshwater biogeographical boundaries, southern Africa is ideally placed to monitor and document climate change.
When Dr Mawila joined the University in March 2020, she had spent nine years at the NRF where she had worked in different capacities, with her last role being Executive Director of Planning and Development in the Strategy Planning and Partnerships division.
