The South African Business Schools Association (SABSA) recently appointed Nelson Mandela University Business School Director Dr Randall Jonas as its new president. Dr Jonas served as the association’s deputy president last year.

The South African Business Schools Association is the national body consisting of all Business Schools in the private as well as public sector. It represents business school offerings, including locally and internationally accredited MBA programmes.

Dr Jonas earlier this year also presented the challenge faced by business schools broadly, but specifically in emerging economies at the Association of MBAs’ (AMBA) Global Deans and Directors Conference in the Swedish capital, Stockholm.

“I hope to expand on the work of my predecessors in consolidating the work of the subcommittees, especially the one under my leadership - Business Engagement - and strengthening our links with the African Association of Business Schools,” he says.

“SABSA recently facilitated a session for its members to reconsider and recalibrate its purpose in society. Key tenets emanating from this are shared identity, inclusivity, transformation, contributing to the National Development Plan, Alumni and sharpening the social mission of business schools. These and other pertinent issues will be at the coalface of my tenure as president for the next two years,” Dr Jonas says.

Dr Jonas joined the Mandela University Business School as its director at the beginning of 2017, bringing with him a wealth of business and education experience. His dealings with the University extend beyond that, with him having previously served on the University Council and the then Mandela University Trust with distinction.

He boasts an elaborate curriculum vitae with more than 35 years’ working experience in both public and private sectors, with many years as Chief Executive Officer of the Eastcape Training Centre (ETC) and Private FET College, where he served industry and commerce in  the development of critical skills.

Dr Jonas has proven leadership and managerial skills and has led numerous public and private sector institutions. He has a commendable record of leading successful turnaround strategies in non-profit organisations and established best practices in corporate governance.
