Change the world

Nelson Mandela University’s Faculty of Law will host its biennial Griffiths and Victoria Mxenge Memorial Institutional Public Lecture on 24 July 2025, commemorating the lives and legacies of two of South Africa’s most courageous legal and political activists.

This year’s lecture will be delivered by Acting Justice of the Constitutional Court and Chairperson of the Nelson Mandela University Council, Justice Nambitha Dambuza, under the thought-provoking theme: “Holding out for the Long Arm of the Law”.

Inspired by the earlier announcement by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regarding the re-opening of inquests into the deaths of liberation stalwarts Chief Albert Luthuli and Griffiths Mxenge, the lecture will reflect on the enduring struggle for truth and accountability in post-apartheid South Africa.

The memorial lecture serves not only as a platform to honour the memory and contribution of Griffiths and Victoria Mxenge, but also as a public intellectual space to interrogate the role of the law and justice in healing the scars of the past.

Date: 24 July 2025

Time: 16:00 – 18:00
Venue: South Campus Auditorium, Nelson Mandela University
