The 37-year-old family man from King William’s Town adds this remarkable achievement to his Higher Certificate in Business Studies, which he obtained in 2019.

Mlinganiso’s journey is testament to perseverance and Mandela University’s resolve to having a transformative impact on its staff and students.

He was among more than 800 employees who were insourced following the historic Council decision in 2015 to directly employ staff members in previously outsourced roles, such as cleaning, catering, protection services and horticulture.

This progressive step was a result of the #FeesMustFall movement and reflected the University’s dedication to advancing the well-being of its employees.

Reflecting on his academic and personal journey, Mlinganiso expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities he has received since joining the University community in June 2016 as a member of the Protection Services team.

“I wish to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for the unwavering support and dedication I have received on my academic journey. As a 37-year-old family man originating from Tamara/Qawukeni Location in King William’s Town, I have faced various challenges and obstacles in pursuing my educational and professional aspirations,” he said.

Raised in a modest home by his grandmother while his mother worked tirelessly to provide for the family, Mlinganiso developed an appreciation for hard work and resilience from a young age. These qualities have been instrumental in his ability to balance work, family and studies.

His dedication saw him complete his Diploma in Logistics over four years as a part-time student, all while serving as a shift supervisor in the University’s Protection Services department.

“Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, including balancing my studies with my responsibilities as a husband, father and shift supervisor, I managed to complete my Diploma in a remarkable four years. Some of the highlights were the support and motivation I received from my line manager, Mr Melubako Maqude, known affectionately as ‘Malume’,” he said.

While his journey was far from easy, Mlinganiso credits his success to the unwavering love and support of his wife, Noxolo Mangiwa-Mlinganiso. Despite her own health struggles, she became his rock, providing encouragement when he needed it most.

“Her resilience and encouragement have been my guiding light, inspiring me to persevere even in the face of adversity. It was painful at times when she became seriously ill, often on the eve of big tests or exams. But even then, she would encourage me not to worry, saying, ‘Let’s pray together holding hands,’ and somehow, she would feel better,” Mlinganiso shared.

His academic journey is fuelled by a dream of establishing his own business in the logistics sector, a goal he continues to refine and plan for.

Nelson Mandela University celebrates his success as an inspiring example of the impact of education, opportunity and unwavering family and professional support. His story reflects the values of perseverance, hard work and the transformative power of education for individuals and their families.

As he looks to the future, Mlinganiso remains grateful to his family, colleagues and the University for their support.

“Once again, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to my wife for her unwavering support and dedication. Her love has been my rock during challenging times, and I am truly blessed to have her by my side,” he said.
