The series, which forms part of the “Diary of Amanda Memeza” series, tells the story of Amanda, who is a fictional yet deeply resonant character whose personal experiences mirror the harsh realities faced by many affected by GBV.
Through Amanda’s journey, the series seeks to raise awareness, provoke dialogue and inspire action in addressing one of society’s most pressing issues.
The series was originally co-conceptualised by the Transformation Office and a group of student activists to reflect the experiences, policy provisions and other contextual factors associated with GBV incidents.
Nobesuthu Rayi played the character of Amanda Memeza in the original film and subsequent video episodes of the first season.
In 2024, the Amanda Memeza series was relaunched and has since grown under the creative direction of content creator Mlondi Bhengu.
The series has evolved to include additional characters and storylines, deepening its contextual relevance and intersections while maintaining its central goal: to create safe spaces for storytelling, reflection and healing.
“This launch of the second season of the series is more than just a screening — it’s a call to action,” says Bhengu. “We hope it will challenge perceptions, spark meaningful conversations and ultimately contribute to building a more inclusive and safe campus culture and beyond.”
The screening forms part of the University’s broader commitment to social inclusion and transformation and our ongoing engagement with the issue of gender-based violence in South Africa and beyond.
