Judge Nambitha Dambuza
This morning, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Judge Dambuza as one of two new appointees to the Constitutional Court, in terms of section 174(4) of the Constitution.
Judge Dambuza’s elevation to the apex court reflects her steadfast dedication to justice, integrity and the rule of law.
She has served with distinction as a judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa since 2015, including a period as Acting President of that court.
Newly appointed Chancellor, Dr Naledi Pandor, expressed “great joy” at the news of Judge Dambuza’s appointment.
“Just three days ago, I had the honour and privilege of being installed as Chancellor by Judge Dambuza. This appointment reflects her exceptional contribution to our judiciary. We celebrate her achievement and are confident she will serve the Constitutional Court with distinction.”
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sibongile Muthwa, said: “Judge Dambuza’s appointment to the apex court is a crowning moment in an eventful and distinguished career, and a proud moment for Nelson Mandela University, the Eastern Cape and the country. Her principled leadership and exemplary service embody the values we uphold as an institution.”
Prof Muthwa added that Judge Dambuza’s leadership as Chairperson of Council is marked by unquestionable integrity, ubuntu and a deep commitment to social justice, while guiding the University towards greater sustainability and the production of graduates equipped to make a meaningful impact in society.
A seasoned jurist with more than two decades of experience, Judge Dambuza was appointed to the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in 2005, before joining the Supreme Court of Appeal. She also serves as a visiting professor in the Faculty of Law at Rhodes University and has a distinguished record in higher education governance.
