The workshop, which starts on Monday and is the second of its kind hosted at NMMU, forms part of the university’s academic innovation and internationalisation programme.
It aims to allow students to engage with renowned international and South African urban planners, designers and architects.
Workshop coordinator Ernest Struwig, a senior architecture lecturer, said: “The three-week workshops programme is an important cultural project. It was intended to make this an annual event. “The workshop will aim to [give] students a broader engagement [with] urban issues from a national and international standpoint,” he said.
The architecture department has been working in close collaboration with the municipality for a number of years.
“The workshops programme forms part of the memorandum of understanding initiative signed between NMMU and the Nelson Mandela Bay metro,” Struwig said.
Three international architectural professors will conduct workshops, as well as public lectures at the City Hall, starting at 6pm.
They are Professor Stephen Read of Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, Professor Armando dal Fabbro of the School of Architecture in Venice, Italy, and Professor Matias Imbern of the National University of Rosario, Argentina.
They will be presenting public lectures at the City Hall where the public are invited to attend free of charge.
A fourth workshop will be presented by Cape Town architect Carin Smuts.
