NMMU in partnership with the Coastal and Marine Research Institute and the American Corner Port Elizabeth will be hosting a talk by United States Science Envoy for the Ocean, Dr Jane Lubchenco tomorrow.

Dr Lubchenco, the first Science Envoy for the Ocean appointed by President Barack Obama, will share her vast knowledge on the ocean and ocean economy.  An expert in marine ecology, environmental science, and climate change, Dr Lubchenco will discuss the state of the ocean, as well as the multiple threats and challenges facing our waters.

These threats require international collaboration to devise holistic solutions to ensure the ocean, as well as its resources, are carefully managed and used to prevent further damage to shared marine ecosystems and the vital functions they fulfill.

Dr Lubchenco has been recognised as an innovative and gifted teacher. Her courses emphasise a combination of the mystery, relevance and excitement of science, and the importance of scientists engaging with society.

The 29 PhD students, 10 masters and 15 postdoctoral students who completed their studies under her direction have gone on to successful careers.

Dr Lubchenco is also one of the “most highly cited” ecologists in the world - eight of her publications are recognised as “Science Citation Classics.” She is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences; the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; the American Philosophical Society; the Royal Society; the World Academy of Science, and the Chilean Academy of Science.

This event will take place on Tuesday, July 19 from 15:00 - 16:30 at the Council Chambers, South Campus.
