Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University staff and students are still reeling from the shocking news of the heinous crime in which a female student was raped and a male student killed in Port Elizabeth this weekend.

The university is deeply saddened by this horrific and unforgivable act and extends its heartfelt condolences to the late student's family.

The university has a zero tolerance stance on sexual violence and will continue with campaigns aimed at ending violence against vulnerable groups.

While the matter is under police investigation, the university will do its best to support the surviving victim in any way possible, with counselling also made available for the wider student population. Should you wish to make use of Counselling services, you can call 041 504 3222, e-mail Tracy-Leigh.McIntyre@nmmu.ac.za or make an appointment in one of the emergency slots at Student Counselling Services on your campus.

The university is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

Full disclosure of the victims will be made once their next of kin have been notified.
