Change the world

After making a good impression in its previous performances, the award-winning Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) choir has advanced to Varsity Sing’s semi-finals which will be aired on KykNet (DSTV Channel 144) at 8:30 pm on 29 September.

Ready to take the stage ... Make sure to catch the NMMU Choir's performance on Varsity Sing on KykNet (DSTV Channel 144) at 8:30pm on 29 September.

Currently ranked 2nd in the list of eight universities going through to the semi-finals, the 55 member choir will be asked to sing new arrangements with vocal soloists, including Loyiso Bala and Coenie de Villiers, should it succeed to the final round of the competition.

Varsity Sing is a new choir competition that started in July this year, and has had 12 universities battle each other to see who the top choir to receive honours in university choral music will be.

With more than 100 000 people tuning into the show, the choirs are under pressure to impress both the judges and the public.

No stranger to the stage, the multi-cultural NMMU choir has performed internationally, having been the only invited choir from Africa to participate in the first Choral Expo in Macau, China, last year.

The choir has this year been invited to perform in America and Canada in November.

In Varsity Sing’s semi-finale, NMMU will be going up against Stellenbosch University, University of Western Cape (UWC) and Rhodes University.
