NMMU’s award-winning choir, well-known for their diverse musical repertoire from Western Classical to traditional African music, will be one of 12 choirs participating in the national Varsity Sing competition organised by Varsity Sports and kykNET.

The 60-member NMMU Choir will start off their first round against Rhodes University and Tshwane University of Technology in the Feather Market Hall tonight (18 May) at 18:30. Entrance is free and tickets are available at the door, but seating is limited.

The two top choirs from this round will compete in the semi-finals in Cape Town and the finals will take place in Johannesburg.

The first four rounds, including the semi-finals of Varsity Sing, will be recorded in front of live audiences and broadcast from July to September on kykNET.

Varsity Sing will culminate in a live musical extravaganza on 13 October, where the Varsity Sing champions will be crowned.

Other participating universities include Western Cape, Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Limpopo, Free State and Central and Vaal Universities of Technology.

The NMMU Choir last year was the only invited choir from Africa to participate in the first Choral Expo in Macau, China and has this year been invited to perform in Canada and America in November.
