NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University’s School of Architecture is hosting three internationally-recognised professors of architecture, as part of its annual International Architecture Workshops, strengthening the country’s architectural ties with the rest of the world.

The visiting professors include Prof Armando Dal Fabbro (top left) from the University Iuav of Venice, Prof Matias Imbern (bottom right) from the National University of Rosario, Argentina and Prof Stephan Read (bottom left) from TU Delft in the Netherlands. Carin Smuts (top right) from CS Studio Architects in Cape Town, is the South African architect who will be presenting at the event.

This year’s theme for the workshops is “Nelson Mandela Bay: Making a place”.

The four workshops will focus on South African architectural themes, particularly in the Eastern Cape and Port Elizabeth, and will act as a catalyst for discussion and debate.

The workshops – which enable South African students to make contact and gain exposure at an international level, and also strengthen South Africa’s architectural engagement with the rest of the world – form part of a memorandum of understanding between NMMU and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality.

It is anticipated that what is shared at the workshops will be taken back to the classrooms here and abroad, and translated into further research and publications.

As part of the visit, a series of public lectures will take place in the Port Elizabeth City Hall, on the following dates, at 6pm:

  • Tuesday, 2 February, by Carin Smuts, titled “Why listen?”
  • Wednesday, 3 February, by Prof. Stephen Read, titled: “Neighbourhood and city: relations and perspective”
  • Wednesday, 10 February, by Prof. Armando Dal Fabbro, titled: “Venice. The shape of the city”
  • Wednesday, 17 February, by Prof. Matías Imbern, titled: “Digital/Analog: Architectural Interpolations”
