The University Council has appointed Dr Sibongile Muthwa, DVC: Institutional Support as Acting Vice-Chancellor from the beginning of May until 31 December 2016 in order to provide Special Leave for the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Derrick Swartz.

During the period of special leave, the Vice-Chancellor will be focusing on leading three strategic macro-projects:

  • re-engineering and re-gearing NMMU’s underlying macro-financial and business model, including its core revenue streams and cost structures to ensure the long-term financial sustainability of the University;
  • securing final approval for, and financial development in support of, NMMU's Medical School project; and
  • establishing a sustainable business model for NMMU’s new Maritime and Marine Sciences Campus.

These initiatives have become crucial to attend to in the light of the need to secure the long-term financial sustainability of NMMU.  South African universities are experiencing serious funding pressures in the aftermath of the fee increase freeze of 2015 and as a result of policy decisions in favour of in-sourcing of services. In addition, Government subsidy on which universities depend for a major part of income, has not kept up with real costs. The current economic downturn suggests the general lag in subsidy-cost ratios would probably remain a defining feature of the higher education funding situation. Therefore, it has become absolutely imperative that NMMU must find innovative and effective ways of grounding its future growth on a sustainable development pathway.

To ensure continuity and leadership in the day-to-day management of the University, Council has appointed Dr Sibongile Muthwa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Institutional Support as Acting Vice-Chancellor. As the longest serving Deputy Vice-Chancellor, she is highly experienced and well versed with all the critical leadership responsibilities of the University, and will enjoy the support of MANCO and all support structures of the University.

We wish Dr Muthwa well in executing her responsibilities over the coming months.
